Commonly asked questions about the Ergochair Adapt 700 chair

Can this chair be fitted with a Neck rest or Headrest? Yes, there are 4 head and neck support options.

  1. Headrest: The ideal option if you just want to provide tactile feedback for better alignment of the head.
  2. Neck roll – ideal for taking some of the weight of the head during upright sitting.
  3. Neck curve: ideal for providing rotational support to the head,
  4. V-rest – this option can be used both as a headrest for positional feedback, or a neck rest for offloading some of the weight of the head.

Where is lumbar support positioned? We can position the lumbar support exactly where the user needs it the most. All we need to know is the distance from the seat pan to the deepest part of the lumbar arch and we can do the rest. For more information on taking measurements please click here.

Why is the Adapt 700 most commonly requested?

  • Larger users requiring an ergonomic chair
  • Nonspecific low back pain
  • Disc Prolapse
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Injury prevention

What is the weight limit for the Adapt 700 Ergochair? The Adapt 700 can be used for individuals weighing up to 250 kg or 40 stone.

What armrests can be used with this chair? The Adapt 700 can be used with the full range of armrests available in the Ergochair range, including height adjustable armrests, height adjustable and retractable armrests, 3D Trigger armrests, and 4D armrests. For more information on these armrests, please go to the basic adaptation tab. Because users are generally putting more weight through the arms than average, we often recommend getting armrests that are button operated so that they will stay in a fixed position when users are pushing through them when standing or sitting. It may also be advisable to get reinforced armrest brackets for heavier users.

Can this chair be reduced in size? Yes, the chair is designed so that it can be cut down in size. If you know what size you want the seat pan please let us know. Alternatively, if you send your client measurements to us we can recommend a size.

Is this the right chair for the user? The Adapt 700 Ergochair is really designed for the larger user who weighs over 125kg. If the user is under 125kg, you might be able to use an Adapt 680. To help you work out which size will fit best, please see the size comparison table below.

What seat options are available?

There are a range of adaptations that can be made to the seat pan of an Adapt 700:

  • If the user has any structural changes to the pelvis or hip (hip replacement, pelvic resections) we can change the 3 dimensional profile of the seat using foam sculpting and or air cell integration.
  • If the user has different length legs, we can supply a wave seat that will support the legs asymmetrically as required.
  • If user has had any sort of amputation, we can use a split seat to accommodate a wide range of prosthetics.
  • If the user has coccyx pain, we can provide coccyx relief zones or coccyx cut-outs.

This is just a small selection of conditions that can be accommodated with this chair. If you have a specific issue you need to resolve with the chair, please contact us so we can advise what options we can provide to help.

Setting up your Adapt 700 Ergochair (please use these instructions with the pdf manual in the downloads section).

  1. Arm Height Adjustment: It is important that the armrests are high enough so that they fully support the underside of the forearm when the elbow is bent at 90 degrees without lifting up the whole shoulder girdle. To raise the armrest, you need to press the button (1) and move the armrests up or down to your ideal height.
  2. Seat Height Adjustment: It is important that you set the seat height so that when your elbows are relaxed at the side and flexed at 90 degrees, the forearms will rest gently on the desk. To set the ideal height, lift handle (2) and lower or raise the seat until the ideal height is found. Please note that if the ideal height brings your feet off the ground, you will most likely need some type of footrest.
  3. Backrest Height Adjustment: It is important that the backrest height is adjusted so that that it fully supports the spine, and the lumbar support is optimally positioned on the lumbar arch. Adjusting the backrest is easy. When sitting on the chair reach your arms backwards and grasp both sides of the backrest to lift it to the desired height. Because the backrest is on a ratchet system you won’t be able to lower it until it has reached the top of the backrest height. To reset, lift the backrest to the very top position then lower to the bottom-most point and restart the lift.
  4. Inflatable Lumbar Support: There is not a standard for how much you should inflate the lumbar support, so most users are recommended to fill it so it feels comfy and snug in the lower back. Because the back position changes throughout the day, we do remind users that they can change the amount of air in the support to suit how they are feeling. Adjustment is simple. You can inflate by squeezing the inflation bulb (4) located under the seat. To let the air out you need to press the valve button attached to the upper bulb.
  5. Seat Tilt: There is evidence to suggest that forward seating will help tilt the pelvis forward. Some people prefer this position for their back whilst others prefer a flatter profile. The seat will tilt independently of the backrest angle. To change, hold the seat tilt lift lever (5) and ask the user to lean forwards. Once in the correct position, you can lower the lever to fix the tilt.
  6. Seat Depth – Please note that because the Adapt 700 has been built with a higher weight tolerance it does not feature a seat depth adjustment. However, the seat pan can be made to measure in order to ensure that it is just the right depth.
  7. Backrest Angle Adjustment: The backrest angle enables you to position the backrest at the ideal angle for you. For most individuals, we try to get the most upright position that remains comfortable. It is worth noting that we will deliberately recline the backrest for certain conditions. To change the angle of the backrest, simply lift the lever (7), and the backrest will then automatically move and you can position it by either leaning against it or letting it roll forwards. Once it is in the ideal position, you need to lower the lever to ensure it stays in place.
  1. Body Weight Tension Adjustment: The Ergochair Adapt 700 can be unlocked so the user can gently move in the chair during the day. The body weight tension adjustment allows you to adjust this tension so that it can support your body weight when you want to be still, but also be moveable when you want to move. The tension hand-wheel (8) is located as shown. If you turn it clockwise you can increase tension, and if you turn it counter-clockwise you can reduce the tension.
  1. Head Support Adjustment: Sometimes it can be useful to use a headrest to provide positional feedback for the head in order to help remind people when it is drifting forward. To adjust it, grasp the sides of the Head Support and lower or raise to the ideal height. You can then rotate the support to find the most comfortable position.

Backrest & Seatpan Modifications

Backrest Width and Height Modification

What is it? Backrests that are too large can become uncomfortable for the users, and so Ergochair offers the ability to trim down the chair to the size that you actually need. The simplest modification of the backrest is to reduce either (or both) the width and the height of the backrest.

How do you do it?

    1. Select your chair template from the Adapt 600 range
    2. Using your measurements, select your backrest width – we recommend that the backrest width is 40mm larger than the hip width
    3. Using your measurements, select your backrest height – we recommend that the backrest height is 350mm less than the shoulder height if you are using a neck rest, or the backrest height mid-range should be the same as the shoulder height if you don’t require a neck rest.

Seat Pan Width and Depth Modification

What is it? For the seat to be comfortable, armrests to fit properly, and for the leg to be adequately supported, it is important to ensure that the seat width and depth are the correct size for the user. The simplest modification of the seat pan is to reduce either (or both) the width and the depth of the seat pan.

      How do you do it?

        1. Select your chair template from the Adapt 600 range
        2. Using your measurements, select your seat pan width – we recommend that the width is 40mm larger than the hip width
        3. Using your measurements, select your seat pan depth – we recommend that the depth of the backrest height is 30mm less than the buttock popliteal length.

          Coccyx Cut Out

What is it? This is the complete cut-out of the cushion that is positioned at the coccyx area.

Who is it for? A coccyx cutout is most popular for individuals with moderate to severe coccyx pain and individuals with coccyx pain who are over 14 stone.

Key Measurements. 140 mm Length x 100 mm Width (Bespoke cut-outs are available).

            Coccyx Zone

What is it? The coccyx zone is an area of the seat where the normal foam has been removed and replaced with a thinner profile memory foam. The result is a subtle coccyx relief zone.

Who is it for? Individuals with mild to moderate coccyx pain.

Key Measurements. 140 mm Length x 100 mm Width.

              Thigh Support(Left, right, or pair)

What is it? Thigh supports are inflatable cassettes that are literally positioned under the thighs. The cells can be added to help counteract a structural change in the pelvis. The inflatable cells can also be used bilaterally to reduce pressure on the coccyx.

Who uses them: Thigh supports can be useful for muscle-wastage related conditions, coccyx pain, and structural changes to the pelvic area.

Key Measurements: Approx. cell size is 200 mm wide x 100 mm depth.

                Air Cells for Backrest Profiling

Not everyone has the same shaped spine, so Ergochair developed the ability to change the 3 dimensional profile of the backrest using air cells either on their own or in combination with foam sculpting. Because these are advanced level modifications we recommend that you speak to us about what modification you need.

                Sacral Cells

What are they? A sacral air cell is an additional inflatable cell that can be added to the lowest part of the backrest.

Who does it work for? When used in combination with a lumbar support, it can be very helpful for individuals who have a low lumbar arch.

                  Reactive Lumbar Cells

What are they? This lumbar support has a triple chamber inflatable cassette. Not only does this offer a much wider lumbar support than the standard single support, but because the chambers are interconnected, as more pressure is placed in one cell the other cells get squeezed. The end result is that the cells can better support the spine as it is moved into different positions during the day.

Who uses it? The reactive lumbar cell is most popular for individuals with a long graduated lumbar arch.

                    Thoracic Cells

What is it? The Thoracic Cell is an additional support that can be positioned in the thoracic region, between the shoulder blades, as a way of providing additional thoracic extension support.

Who can use it? This type of support is most popular for individuals who tend to slump in the thoracic region, it is also popular for those with protracted shoulder blades.

                      Vertical Cells

What are they? Vertical support cells can be positioned at any point on the backrest to fill an area between the chair and an individual’s spine. They can also be used to provide a more general lateral support.

Who is it used for? This type of support is most commonly used as part of a solution to accommodate scoliosis of the spine that has led to differences in the lateral position and depth of the spine on one side of the body.

                        Reactive Vertical Cells

What is it? In this configuration, the triple air cell unit is rotated 90 degrees so it acts as a vertical support across the middle part of the backrest. Because the three air cells are interconnected, air can transit to each cell as weight is transferred across the unit.

Who is it used for? This is particularly popular for individuals with lateral spine changes, such as a minor scoliosis.

                          Foam Sculpting

Foam sculpting involves literally cutting the foam on the back support; both with or without additional memory foam in order to totally personalise the profile of the backrest. Like air cell integration, foam sculpting is an advanced adaptation, so we recommend contacting us with any questions you have about this adaptation.

Who is it used for? Most commonly, foam sculpting is used to accommodate changes in the spinal shape cause by Scoliosis and Kyphosis. However, because of the sheer range of profiles that can be shaped, it is possible to use foam sculpting to accommodate a vast range of spine shapes.

                            Memory Foam Layer

What is it? There are several ways we can use memory foam to change the backrest dynamics. Adding a single layer of foam provides a more supportive sitting surface that over time will gradually conform to the shape of the user’s spine. As another option, it is possible to combine a layer of memory foam with foam sculpting, which means we can provide a very precise profile that better conforms to the shape of the spine.

Who is it for? Standard memory foam is most commonly used for people who have low back pain.A combination of memory foam and foam profiling is most commonly used for individuals who have some degree of kyphosis or scoliosis.

                              Stitched Seat

As part of the manufacturing process, the fabric is stretched across the seat pan and attached under the seat. The result is a highly tensioned fabric and slightly convex seat. Whilst this profile suits a lot of people, some individuals prefer a flatter profile chair and a more adaptable fabric, which is achieved through stitching on each side of the seat to have the fabric pulled over the top.

                                  Armrest & Neckrest Options

                                  Armrest Options

For many people, armrests are very important for offloading the upper limbs and sometimes people have issues when they cannot get adequate upper limb support, because the armrest is not correctly positioned under the arm. This is normally because the armrest is too wide. Another common problem is that the armrest is not height adjustable and or retractable, and as a result, it is difficult for the user to get sufficiently close to the desk. We at Ergochair have developed a range of armrests that can be used for nearly every upper limb need. If you are not sure which armrests will best suit your needs, please contact us.

                                  • You can rotate the armrest to follow the direction of the forearm during typing

                                  Disadvantages:

                                  • The arm pads can move when you put weight on them

                                  Key Measurements:

                                  • Height range from seat pad 160-240mm

                                  Disadvantages:
                                  • No depth adjustability
                                  • You cannot rotate the armrest to follow the direction of forearm for typing

                                  Disadvantages:

                                  • Weaker mounting mechanism means these supports don’t last as long as standard armrests

                                  Neck Roll:

Description: The neck roll is a rounded soft support designed to be positioned in the crook of the neck. The support is most popular when people want to be able to support some of the weight of the head through the cushion.

                                  Headrest:

Description: The headrest is a large diameter flat support designed to be positioned behind the back of the head. The rest is not really designed to support the head weight in an upright position, but does provide great positional feedback to the user to ensure that they position their headrest far enough back.

                                  V- Rest:

Description: The V-Rest is essentially a hybrid of a neck roll and a headrest. The support is flat enough to be used as a headrest, which is great for giving users feedback on the position of their head. Equally, however, it can be rotated into a highly supportive neck rest that can take some of the weight of the head.

                                  SEAT HEIGHT OPTIONS

                                  Gas Lifts

Description: There are a range of different gas lifts which will dictate the seat height. When deciding on the gas lift, it is very important to consider the desk height so that the user can be raised high enough to ensure a level working surface. If the user is shorter than average, this may mean that their feet come off the floor, so they may need a footrest to bridge the gap.

                                  CASTOR OPTIONS

                                  Castors

Description: Castors are not normally the first thing most people think about when selecting a chair, but it is well worth giving them some thought because they will directly influence how the chair will move around the environment.

                                  • 65mm Hard Floor Castors: Most customers will select standard hard floor castors when using the chair on stone, concrete, and tiled areas
                                  • 65mm Soft Floor Castors: These castors are best for slightly thicker carpets
                                  • 65mm Friction Unloaded Castors: If you have concerns about the chair rolling away when it is unloaded, you can use castors which will apply a small break when there is no weight on the chair
                                  • 65mm Friction Loaded Castors: If you are looking for there to be very little movement when sitting in the chair, the best option would be for friction loaded castors which will automatically brake when there is body weight on the chair
                                  • 65mm Lockable Castors: For total stability you can get castors which are lockable

                                  FOOT SUPPORT OPTIONS

                                  Foot Ring

Description: Sometimes people have to raise up the chair height to a higher than normal position, which can result in the feet being left dangling in the air. If the feet are left unsupported, more weight will be transferred through the top half of the thighs, which can become uncomfortable over time. A footring can be attached to the gas stem at a set height so that the user can still put their feet on a stable surface whilst working at a higher position.

                                      Foot Ring with Half Footplate

Description: Some people working at a higher level can’t find a simple footring that is supportive enough for the whole foot. For these individuals, we recommend the footring with a half footplate which is also height adjustable.

                                          Extended Footplate

Description: The extended footplate offers an extra-large solid base foot area and a height adjustment as standard.

                                              Swivel lock:

Description: The swivel lock is a highly engineered braking system that can be combined with a gas lift to ensure the seat won’t rotate when the brake is applied. This is particularly useful if the user finds getting out of the freely moveable chair difficult. It is worth noting that whilst the chair seat will not swivel, this lock will not stop the castors from moving. For a mechanism that brakes the castors as well, you need to consider the M-lock instead.

                                              MLOCK:

Description: The M lock is a simple but highly engineered device that will hold your chair totally still when the lock is applied. The device works with a hand or battery pump that engages non slip feet for maximum positional stability. This function is most commonly used by wheelchair users who need to make a transfer between their office chair and a wheelchair.
