Ergochair Adapt 200 Chair

The Adapt 200 is our smallest ergonomic chair which can be adjusted to fit nearly every smaller adult and child’s dimensions.

The chair has become most popular for individuals who are significantly smaller than the average sized user. A key difference with this chair compared to the Adapt 500 and 600 is that the chair can be made significantly smaller.

It is worth noting that in addition to being able to fit the backrest and seat pan to the user’s three dimensional profile, the seat can be totally customized, and as a result, it can be used to accommodate short and long term changes in spine and or pelvis shape including growth restrictions, kyphosis, hyper-lordosis, pelvis resections, amputations, etc.

Commonly Asked Questions about the Ergochair Adapt 200

Who Is the Ergochair Adapt 200 Most Commonly Requested for:

  • Smaller individuals
  • Nonspecific low back pain
  • Disc Prolapse
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Sciatica
  • Injury prevention

Can the chair be fitted with a footrest? Yes, because individuals using this type of chair often have to work with a higher desk, you can add the Ergostep to the bottom of the chair, which can be used to assist in getting on and off the chair, and to provide a solid surface for the feet when working at desk height.

Should I get the Ergochair Adapt 200 or Adapt 510? The actual adjustment capabilities on the 200 and 510 are very similar. The chairs are also a similar price, so the choice normally comes down to the size of the individual. Using the product size comparison table, you can work out which size will fit the best .

Will it resolve my back pain? Most research suggests that the vast majority of back pain episodes are caused by a combination of one or more factors that relate to lifestyle, posture, previous injuries, genetics, and psychological factors. When dealing with such a complex picture, it is unlikely that beginning to use an ergonomic chair on its own is going to completely solve the issue. However, there is no doubt that sitting with good posture can really increase comfort and when combined with a multifactorial rehabilitation program, good sitting posture is likely to improve back pain and reduce the risk of further back pain episodes from happening.

What are the most common features requested on this chair? The most commonly requested adaptations requested include:

  • Armrests
  • Lower seat height gas stems
  • Footrests
  • Headrests
  • Air cells
  • Coccyx comfort zones

Will it take long to get used to this chair? No, getting used to this type of chair is generally a quick process for most people. If you have been sitting in an abnormal posture for a relatively long period of time, we have found that it can sometimes take several weeks for the body to adjust, and during this time people often report low grade aches and pains in different parts of the back and/or upper limbs, which are most likely because the body is in a new position, which is stretching some soft tissues and making certain muscles work in a different way.

Adjusting your Adapt 200 Chair(please use this in conjunction with the instruction manual in the download tab).

  1. Arm Height Adjustment: The armrest should directly support the bottom of the forearm when it is flexed at 90 degrees. To adjust the armrest to the optimal position, press button (1) and slide the armrest up or down to the desired height. Once in position release the button.
  2.  Seat Height Adjustment: The seat height should be set so that the bottom of your forearms can gently rest on the surface of the desk when the elbow is bent at 90 degrees. To do this, pull handle (2) and lower or raise the seat height as needed. If the armrests have been adjusted correctly, you should find that the top of the chair arms should be level with the top of the desk.
  3. Inflatable Lumbar Support: There is no known optimal level of inflation for the lumbar support, so you should fill it so that is feels comfortable and supportive (please note that the level of support you need from the lumbar support may change during the day, so please feel free to change it as and when required). You can inflate the support by press the inflation bulb (3) which located under the seat. To let air out of the lumbar support, push in the valve button that is attached to the bottom of the bulb.
  4. Back Height Adjustment: It is important to adjust the seat back height so that the lumbar support is positioned in the arch of the back. To adjust the back height, reach back and grasp both sides of the backrest and lift to the desired height. Because the backrest is on a ratchet system, it will only move up until it gets to the top of the height range and then it will drop to the bottom. Sometimes you will then need to push the backrest downwards again so that it engages with the ratchet mechanism.
  5. Forward Seat Tilt: There is no known ideal seat tilt position. However, it is clear that some individuals do prefer the seat pan to be tilted forward, which will facilitate a more forward tilting pelvis. To adjust the forward seat tilt, lift lever (5) and ask the user to lean forward and the seat will tilt to its most forward position. You can then lock the position by depressing lever 5 at any point.
  6. Seat Depth Adjustment: It is important to ensure that the seat pan supports as much of the thigh as possible whilst leaving a 2-3cm gap between the front of the seat pan and the back of the calf. The seat depth can be adjusted by lifting the lever (6) and pulling the seat to the required depth before releasing the lever.
  7. Backrest Angle Adjustment: For a lot of people it is important to sit nice and upright during the day whilst also maintaining a comfortable position. To adjust the angle of the backrest simply lift the lever (7). The backrest will automatically move forward and you can adjust its position by either letting it come forward or pushing against it to move it backward. Once in position you need to lower the lever to secure the position.
  8. Body Weight Tension Adjustment: During the day some people like to unlock the chair so that they can gently rock on it. To optimise this movement, it is important to ensure that the tension of the rocking mechanism is adjusted for your weight. The tension hand-wheel (8) is located centrally at the front underside of the seat. You can increase the rocking tension by turning this wheel clockwise or decrease the tension by turning the wheel counter clockwise.
  9. Neck Support Adjustment: A neck rest is sometimes used during the day to redistribute a small amount of the weight of the head to the neck support. To position the neck rest, whilst in a sitting position reach back and hold the sides of the Neck Support and raise or lower it so it is positioned at the base of the skull.

Backrest & Seatpan Modifications

Backrest Width and Height Modification

What is it? Backrests that are too large can become uncomfortable for the users, and so Ergochair offers the ability to trim down the chair to the size that you actually need. The simplest modification of the backrest is to reduce either (or both) the width and the height of the backrest.

How do you do it?

    1. Select your chair template from the Adapt 600 range
    2. Using your measurements, select your backrest width – we recommend that the backrest width is 40mm larger than the hip width
    3. Using your measurements, select your backrest height – we recommend that the backrest height is 350mm less than the shoulder height if you are using a neck rest, or the backrest height mid-range should be the same as the shoulder height if you don’t require a neck rest.

What chairs are compatible with this adaptation? Adapt 200/500/600/700

Seat Pan Width and Depth Modification

What is it? For the seat to be comfortable, armrests to fit properly, and for the leg to be adequately supported, it is important to ensure that the seat width and depth are the correct size for the user. The simplest modification of the seat pan is to reduce either (or both) the width and the depth of the seat pan.

      How do you do it?

        1. Select your chair template from the Adapt 600 range
        2. Using your measurements, select your seat pan width – we recommend that the width is 40mm larger than the hip width
        3. Using your measurements, select your seat pan depth – we recommend that the depth of the backrest height is 30mm less than the buttock popliteal length.

          Coccyx Cut Out

What is it? This is the complete cut-out of the cushion that is positioned at the coccyx area.

Who is it for? A coccyx cutout is most popular for individuals with moderate to severe coccyx pain and individuals with coccyx pain who are over 14 stone.

Key Measurements. 140 mm Length x 100 mm Width (Bespoke cut-outs are available).

What chairs are compatible with this adaptation? Adapt 200/500/600/700

            Coccyx Zone

What is it? The coccyx zone is an area of the seat where the normal foam has been removed and replaced with a thinner profile memory foam. The result is a subtle coccyx relief zone.

Who is it for? Individuals with mild to moderate coccyx pain.

Key Measurements. 140 mm Length x 100 mm Width.

              Wave Seat

What is it? A wave seat is a seat pan where the actual length of the seat pan is asymmetric so that it can support different leg lengths.

Who is it for? Individuals with unequal thigh length.

Key Measurements. Minimum seat depth: 340.

                Thigh Support(Left, right, or pair)

What is it? Thigh supports are inflatable cassettes that are literally positioned under the thighs. The cells can be added to help counteract a structural change in the pelvis. The inflatable cells can also be used bilaterally to reduce pressure on the coccyx.

Who uses them: Thigh supports can be useful for muscle-wastage related conditions, coccyx pain, and structural changes to the pelvic area.

Key Measurements: Approx. cell size is 200 mm wide x 100 mm depth.

                  ErgocoreSeat Cell

What is it? This dual-chamber air-cell option sits inside the seat and provides a ‘reactive sit’ to gently activate your core and lower back muscles whilst cushioning your sit bones.

Who uses them: Ergocore seat cells are particularly useful for sciatic relief and general core strengthening.

What is the size? Approx. cell size: 380 mm Wide x 230 mm Depth.

                    Extra Memory Foam Layer

What is it? Like the backrest, it is possible to add extra memory foam layers to the seat pan. As the memory foam heats up, it will slowly adapt to the user’s body shape and redistribute weight through a much wider area.

Who is it used for: Most commonly for individuals who have pressure sensitive tissues in the buttock area.

Key Measurements? Each layer is approx. 20 mm thick (non-compressed).

                      Split Seat

What is it? The Split Seat option has deflecting front sections at different points and can be custom-made to the user’s measurements.

Who is it for? Split seats work very well when you are trying to accommodate big differences in thigh length which may be caused by pelvis resections, fused hips, or amputations. The spilt is also very useful for accommodating prosthetics.

Key Measurements: Min overall depth: 450 mm Min width: 410 mm

                        Air Cells for Backrest Profiling

Not everyone has the same shaped spine, so Ergochair developed the ability to change the 3 dimensional profile of the backrest using air cells either on their own or in combination with foam sculpting. Because these are advanced level modifications we recommend that you speak to us about what modification you need.

                        Sacral Cells

What are they? A sacral air cell is an additional inflatable cell that can be added to the lowest part of the backrest.

Who does it work for? When used in combination with a lumbar support, it can be very helpful for individuals who have a low lumbar arch.

                          Reactive Lumbar Cells

What are they? This lumbar support has a triple chamber inflatable cassette. Not only does this offer a much wider lumbar support than the standard single support, but because the chambers are interconnected, as more pressure is placed in one cell the other cells get squeezed. The end result is that the cells can better support the spine as it is moved into different positions during the day.

Who uses it? The reactive lumbar cell is most popular for individuals with a long graduated lumbar arch.

                            Thoracic Cells

What is it? The Thoracic Cell is an additional support that can be positioned in the thoracic region, between the shoulder blades, as a way of providing additional thoracic extension support.

Who can use it? This type of support is most popular for individuals who tend to slump in the thoracic region, it is also popular for those with protracted shoulder blades.

                              Vertical Cells

What are they? Vertical support cells can be positioned at any point on the backrest to fill an area between the chair and an individual’s spine. They can also be used to provide a more general lateral support.

Who is it used for? This type of support is most commonly used as part of a solution to accommodate scoliosis of the spine that has led to differences in the lateral position and depth of the spine on one side of the body.

                                Reactive Vertical Cells

What is it? In this configuration, the triple air cell unit is rotated 90 degrees so it acts as a vertical support across the middle part of the backrest. Because the three air cells are interconnected, air can transit to each cell as weight is transferred across the unit.

Who is it used for? This is particularly popular for individuals with lateral spine changes, such as a minor scoliosis.

                                  Foam Sculpting

Foam sculpting involves literally cutting the foam on the back support; both with or without additional memory foam in order to totally personalise the profile of the backrest. Like air cell integration, foam sculpting is an advanced adaptation, so we recommend contacting us with any questions you have about this adaptation.

Who is it used for? Most commonly, foam sculpting is used to accommodate changes in the spinal shape cause by Scoliosis and Kyphosis. However, because of the sheer range of profiles that can be shaped, it is possible to use foam sculpting to accommodate a vast range of spine shapes.

                                    Memory Foam Layer

What is it? There are several ways we can use memory foam to change the backrest dynamics. Adding a single layer of foam provides a more supportive sitting surface that over time will gradually conform to the shape of the user’s spine. As another option, it is possible to combine a layer of memory foam with foam sculpting, which means we can provide a very precise profile that better conforms to the shape of the spine.

Who is it for? Standard memory foam is most commonly used for people who have low back pain.A combination of memory foam and foam profiling is most commonly used for individuals who have some degree of kyphosis or scoliosis.

                                      Stitched Seat

As part of the manufacturing process, the fabric is stretched across the seat pan and attached under the seat. The result is a highly tensioned fabric and slightly convex seat. Whilst this profile suits a lot of people, some individuals prefer a flatter profile chair and a more adaptable fabric, which is achieved through stitching on each side of the seat to have the fabric pulled over the top.

                                          Armrest & Neckrest Options

                                          Armrest Options

For many people, armrests are very important for offloading the upper limbs and sometimes people have issues when they cannot get adequate upper limb support, because the armrest is not correctly positioned under the arm. This is normally because the armrest is too wide. Another common problem is that the armrest is not height adjustable and or retractable, and as a result, it is difficult for the user to get sufficiently close to the desk. We at Ergochair have developed a range of armrests that can be used for nearly every upper limb need. If you are not sure which armrests will best suit your needs, please contact us.

                                          • Height Adjustable – button adjustable
                                          • Width Adjustable - handle adjustable
                                          • Depth Adjustable – slide adjustable
                                          • Arm pad width adjustable – button controlled

                                          Advantages:

                                          • The arm pads will not move when you put weight on them
                                          • Height adjustability will enable you to optimise upper limb support for the appropriate desk height
                                          • The arm pads can be retracted so you can get closer to the desk
                                          • The additional level of width adjustability is particularly helpful when the inside elbow width is significantly narrower than the hip width

                                          Disadvantages:

                                          • Lack of rotation means that the armrest support will not directly follow the direction of the forearm during typing
                                          Key Measurements:
                                          • Height range from seat pad 150-240mm

                                          Neck Roll:

Description: The neck roll is a rounded soft support designed to be positioned in the crook of the neck. The support is most popular when people want to be able to support some of the weight of the head through the cushion.

                                          Headrest:

Description: The headrest is a large diameter flat support designed to be positioned behind the back of the head. The rest is not really designed to support the head weight in an upright position, but does provide great positional feedback to the user to ensure that they position their headrest far enough back.

                                          V- Rest:

Description: The V-Rest is essentially a hybrid of a neck roll and a headrest. The support is flat enough to be used as a headrest, which is great for giving users feedback on the position of their head. Equally, however, it can be rotated into a highly supportive neck rest that can take some of the weight of the head.

                                          SEAT HEIGHT OPTIONS

                                          Gas Lifts

Description: There are a range of different gas lifts which will dictate the seat height. When deciding on the gas lift, it is very important to consider the desk height so that the user can be raised high enough to ensure a level working surface. If the user is shorter than average, this may mean that their feet come off the floor, so they may need a footrest to bridge the gap.

                                          CASTOR OPTIONS

                                          Castors

Description: Castors are not normally the first thing most people think about when selecting a chair, but it is well worth giving them some thought because they will directly influence how the chair will move around the environment.

                                          • 65mm Hard Floor Castors: Most customers will select standard hard floor castors when using the chair on stone, concrete, and tiled areas
                                          • 65mm Soft Floor Castors: These castors are best for slightly thicker carpets
                                          • 65mm Friction Unloaded Castors: If you have concerns about the chair rolling away when it is unloaded, you can use castors which will apply a small break when there is no weight on the chair
                                          • 65mm Friction Loaded Castors: If you are looking for there to be very little movement when sitting in the chair, the best option would be for friction loaded castors which will automatically brake when there is body weight on the chair
                                          • 65mm Lockable Castors: For total stability you can get castors which are lockable

                                          FOOT SUPPORT OPTIONS

                                          Foot Ring

Description: Sometimes people have to raise up the chair height to a higher than normal position, which can result in the feet being left dangling in the air. If the feet are left unsupported, more weight will be transferred through the top half of the thighs, which can become uncomfortable over time. A footring can be attached to the gas stem at a set height so that the user can still put their feet on a stable surface whilst working at a higher position.

                                          Key Measurement: Diameter 500 mm

                                              Foot Ring with Half Footplate

Description: Some people working at a higher level can’t find a simple footring that is supportive enough for the whole foot. For these individuals, we recommend the footring with a half footplate which is also height adjustable.

                                                      Swivel lock:

Description: The swivel lock is a highly engineered braking system that can be combined with a gas lift to ensure the seat won’t rotate when the brake is applied. This is particularly useful if the user finds getting out of the freely moveable chair difficult. It is worth noting that whilst the chair seat will not swivel, this lock will not stop the castors from moving. For a mechanism that brakes the castors as well, you need to consider the M-lock instead.

                                                      MLOCK:

Description: The M lock is a simple but highly engineered device that will hold your chair totally still when the lock is applied. The device works with a hand or battery pump that engages non slip feet for maximum positional stability. This function is most commonly used by wheelchair users who need to make a transfer between their office chair and a wheelchair.
